The Road to Happiness
Imagine happiness as a shimmering city on a distant hill—bathed in golden light, always just beyond the horizon. You’ve heard the stories: of people who live with lightness in their hearts, who smile for no reason, who move through life with calm and clarity. But for most, that city feels like a legend, hidden behind fog, responsibilities, and the noise of everyday life. You keep walking, wondering if happiness is real—or just a beautiful illusion. The truth? That city exists. The road to happiness may twist and climb, but it’s not lost. With the right steps, even weary souls can find their way back to joy or start a new adventure.
Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart- Psalm 37:4
What does your heart desire? Do you find yourself saying, “I just want to be happy” multiple times, or telling God, “I’ll settle for content” …
Happiness isn’t just a fleeting feeling or a word we can stumble into by chance. It’s a skill—one that grows through intentional prayer, heartfelt supplication, and purposeful action. To truly experience happiness, we first need to define it:
- What does happiness look like for you?
- How will you recognize it when it’s present?
- What sensations or emotions signal that happiness is happening?
While we might wish to feel happy all the time, the real question is—how do we cultivate happiness in our daily lives?
Galatians 5: 22- But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Go down this rabbit hole with me: Holy Spirit lives inside of us, correct? Okay and, God gave us dominion over the world, correct (Genesis 1:28)? Right, right… so if Holy Spirit lives inside of us and we have dominion over the world, can we agree that we have the power of Holy Spirit living in us and we can use that same power (dominion) to cultivate or produce “this kind of fruit in our lives”…
Matthew 7:20- Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so can you identify people by their actions.
This is why you can identify a tree by its “fruit”. Let that simmer for a moment…
Above are your instructions for cultivating happiness in your life.
“But Dr. K, how do I pull into that power?”
I’m glad you asked- ready for a game-changer- These nifty tips might just surprise you, and they really work!
- Change your environment- Step outside, breathe in that fresh air, and let the sun or breeze wake up your soul. Pause for a moment, feel the weather on your skin, and soak in some gratitude—you deserve that.
- Make a list- Grab a pen and write down the moments that made you smile, the situations that reminded you you’re blessed. Life isn’t perfect—but it could always be different. Stay rooted in gratefulness for what you have, and in prayer for your desires.
- Live in mindfulness- Take little pauses throughout your day to truly tune in—look around, soak it in. Stop. Breathe. Think. Smile. Those small moments of awareness can shift everything.
Pause. Breath. Before I exit this blog, hold onto this timeless quote:
“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”
